GEO for retail chains: being the answer to “is it in stock at the nearest store?”

Before heading out, a shopper can ask an AI for “an electronics shop in Kadıköy that’s open on Sunday” or “which branch has this drill today?”. Getting the facts right for one shop is easy; keeping the address, hours, phone and stock of a hundred branches identical and current everywhere is a job of its own.

✳ Short answer

GEO for retail chains is the work of getting your brand named with accurate store details in branch, opening-hour, availability and promotion questions. Every branch appears on its own page and map profile with the same name, category and contact details, in-store stock is published through local inventory data, and promotion copy follows the discount advertising rules.

What do shoppers ask AI?

Question typeExampleWhat the answer relies on
Branch“Where is the nearest [brand] store?”Branch address and location
Hours“Is the [brand] Bornova branch open on the holiday?”Special-day opening hours
Stock“Which branch has this shoe in size 42?”In-store stock data
Promotion“Is there a sale at [brand] this week?”Current promotion and its terms

How should branch data be organised?

  • One name, consistent categories: under Google Business Profile guidelines, all locations of a chain use the same name, and locations offering the same service share the same category. Sub-brands or different business types (retail and wholesale, say) may use their own name consistently across their locations, and locations that consistently use a different name on their storefront may use that name[1].
  • One page per branch: a store locator is more than a map widget; each branch’s address, hours, phone and services sit on a crawlable page.
  • Markup per branch: Google recommends defining each location as its own LocalBusiness, with the most specific type possible; departments with their own hours or phone numbers can be marked up with the department property[2].
  • Special-day hours: holidays, New Year and stock-take days are updated in advance on the site and on map profiles. On those days a wrong opening time sends a shopper to a closed store.

How do in-store products become visible?

Google Merchant Center’s local inventory add-on is used to show products in physical stores, along with store information, to nearby shoppers; with free local listings, the in-store products you sell can appear on Google at no cost. If your site has no in-store stock information, a Google-hosted store page is also an option[3].

Showing “in stock at this store” per branch on your product pages gives the question “which branch has it today?” an answer from your own site. In the first month we agree together how often stock data is refreshed and for which product groups it’s shown.

Which rules apply to promotion and discount copy?

Article 14 of Türkiye’s Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices requires every discount ad to state the pre-discount price, the start and end dates and, if quantities are limited, the quantity. Under the amendment in force since 1 August 2026, the pre-discount price for goods is the lowest price applied in the ten days before the discount starts; for perishable goods such as fruit and vegetables, it is the price that applied just before the discounted one[4].

The same amendment matters directly to chains selling across channels: the pre-discount price is calculated from the price in the channel where the discount applies, and a price in one channel cannot be used as the basis for a discount in another. Discount ads in easily accessible loyalty programmes are covered by the article too[4].

Promotion pages can also become sources for AI answers, so keeping the terms complete on the page does two jobs: compliance, and lowering the risk that an ended promotion is repeated in answers as if it were still running. That’s why we state the end date clearly on the page of a finished promotion.

The same questions every month across 6 engines; alongside citation share, the number of wrong branch facts is tracked as its own indicator.

Frequently asked questions

01We have hundreds of branches. Do we really need a page for each?

If branches differ in address, hours and services, we recommend it: branch-specific facts get a direct link and each branch can be updated on its own. The pages come from one template and one data source, and each is filled with branch-specific facts, not copied text.

02Different operators run our franchise branches. What changes?

Ownership of map profiles and the right to update them can vary by branch. We first map who manages which profile, then set up a shared update flow for names, categories and hours.

03We also have an online store. Does this file cover e-commerce?

This file focuses on the physical branch network: branch facts, in-store stock and branch promotions. Online product data is separate work; the two can be measured together with one question set.
