AI visibility is measured by asking a fixed question set (e.g. 50 questions) every month in the same engines, in clean sessions, with repeats. Five core metrics: citation share (share of answers naming you), recommendation position (your place in lists), sentiment score (how you’re described), source coverage (which of your URLs are cited) and AI-referred traffic (AI referrals in GA4).
Step 1: Build a fixed question set
The question set is a sample of what your customers ask AI before deciding. Five intent groups give a balanced picture:
| Group | Example question | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | “What’s the best GEO agency in Istanbul?” | Your place in recommendation lists |
| Price | “How much does GEO cost?” | Whether you’re a source for pricing questions |
| Problem | “Why doesn’t ChatGPT recommend my brand?” | Visibility of your informational content |
| Comparison | “GEO or SEO?” | Whether your tables and comparisons get quoted |
| Brand | “What is Vextoo Geo Agency — is it reliable?” | Accurate representation of the brand |
Step 2: Fix the conditions
- Ask each question in a clean session (no history or memory, logged out or temporary chat).
- Ask each question at least twice; if answers differ, record both.
- For questions that need web search, make sure search mode is on.
- Archive the answer, source links and date; next month’s comparison is based on it.
Step 3: Compute the five metrics
| Metric | Formula | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Citation share | Answers naming the brand ÷ total answers | Primary visibility indicator |
| Recommendation position | Average position in list answers | Being named isn’t enough; rank matters |
| Sentiment score | Positive / neutral / negative / wrong split | Track “wrong” separately |
| Source coverage | Number and type of your cited URLs | Shows which pages work |
| AI-referred traffic | AI referrals in GA4 | Bridge to business results (GA4 guide) |
Where is there first-party data?
- Bing Webmaster Tools → AI Performance: citations in Copilot answers, cited pages and grounding queries (in preview since February 2026)[1].
- Google Search Console: AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in overall Web data; no separate filter[2].
- GA4: referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com.
Common measurement mistakes
- Measuring with questions that contain your brand name (“Is Vextoo Geo Agency good?”) — being named there is no surprise; it inflates visibility.
- Asking different questions each month — comparison becomes impossible.
- Measuring one engine and generalizing — ChatGPT doesn’t tell you about Perplexity.
- Counting only positive mentions — wrong information is the most dangerous outcome.
Frequently asked questions
01What is citation share?
Citation share is the ratio of AI answers that name your brand to all answers for a fixed question set. If you’re named in 45 of 300 answers (50 questions × 6 engines), your citation share is 15%.
02Are AI visibility tools enough?
Tools make repetition and archiving easier, but building the right question set, interpreting answers and tracing the source of wrong information still require human analysis.
