AEO structures your content as “question → clear answer → evidence” and marks it up with schema, so answer engines pick you as the source. Think of it as a subset of GEO: AEO wins the answer to one question; GEO manages how the brand is represented across AI answers overall.
What is AEO and how is it different from GEO?
The term AEO predates the generative AI wave; it was coined for featured snippets and voice search. The principle — give the user’s question one clear, quotable answer — now applies equally to AI Overviews[2], ChatGPT search and Perplexity.
| Dimension | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Question | “Which page answers this?” | “Which brand gets named in this category?” |
| What you win | Snippet, AI Overviews quote, voice answer | A place in recommendations, accurate representation, citations |
| Main tool | Q&A page structure + schema | Entity consistency + content + third-party mentions |
| Measurement | Snippets/quotes, question-format queries | Citation share, recommendation position, sentiment |
All the terms side by side: AEO vs GEO vs LLMO vs AI SEO.
What’s included in AEO services?
- Question inventory: one list merging your sales team, support desk, question-format queries in Search Console and “People also ask”.
- Question → page mapping: exactly one owner page per question. Two pages answering the same question weaken each other.
- Answer-first writing: question as H2, answer in the first 40–60 words, then detail, table and source. Engines quote that first block most.
- Schema markup: FAQPage, QAPage, HowTo (when appropriate), Article, BreadcrumbList — always matching the visible text.
- FAQ architecture: short page-specific FAQ blocks on every service and product page instead of one generic FAQ page.
- Voice readiness: conversational question patterns and intent phrases like “near me”, “how much”, “which is better”.
How does the engagement run?
- Weeks 1–2
Inventory and mapping
Questions are collected, grouped by intent and assigned to pages; missing pages are listed.
- Weeks 2–6
Restructuring and markup
Existing pages move to answer-first form, schema is added and validated.
- Month 2+
New answer pages
Pages written for questions competitors win and you don’t answer yet.
- Monthly
Measurement
Impressions/clicks for question queries, snippets and AI quotes, mentions in AI answers.
What does an answer-first paragraph look like?
Two versions of the same information. The first is marketing copy; the second is a quotable answer:
✕ “With years of experience, we are proud to offer our valued patients
the highest-quality implant service on the best terms.”
✓ “Implant treatment at our clinic takes 3–6 months on average: the implant
is placed in one session, osseointegration takes 2–5 months, then the
permanent crown is fitted. Timing depends on bone density and grafting.”The second paragraph stands on its own, gives a concrete duration and says what it depends on. That is what answer engines select. Writing rules: citable content guide.
Frequently asked questions
01What is AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is structuring and marking up content in question-and-answer form so it is selected as the direct answer by Google featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants and answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
02Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO aims to rank a page high in a results list; AEO aims to have a specific paragraph on your page chosen as the answer to a question. AEO works on top of a sound SEO foundation.
03Does FAQ schema still work?
Google removed FAQ rich results from Search entirely in May 2026, so the feature no longer appears for any site[1]. FAQPage is still a valid schema.org type that states the question-answer relationship explicitly for machines. We add it for clarity, not for a rich result, and only for questions and answers visible on the page.
