Gemini and Google AI Overviews: appearing in Google’s AI answers

Ask Google a question today and the answer often comes before the ten blue links, in the AI Overviews box at the top; AI Mode handles deeper questions and the Gemini app handles conversation. All three rest on the same thing: Google’s search index.

✳ Short answer

According to Google, to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet — there are no extra technical requirements or special files[1]. So good SEO + answer-first content + structured data is also the foundation for Google’s AI surfaces. Google-Extended only controls Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini apps; it does not affect Search visibility[2].

How do AI Overviews and AI Mode pick sources?

AI Overviews show a summary compiled from pages in Google’s index, with supporting links; AI Mode does the same conversationally. According to Google, both may use a query fan-out technique — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics — to build the answer[1]. That favours sites that answer the whole set of questions around a topic, not a single keyword.

What should you do to appear in Google’s AI answers?

  1. Index first: confirm pages are indexed in Search Console and fix technical issues (SEO services).
  2. Build a topic cluster: around your main service page, add pages answering the sub-questions customers ask — query fan-out searches for exactly those.
  3. Answer-first paragraphs: the first 40–60 words under every H2 should stand alone as an answer (AEO).
  4. Structured data: Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList — matching the visible text (schema guide).
  5. Don’t restrict snippets: remove unnecessary nosnippet or low max-snippet values.
  6. Google Business Profile: for local questions Gemini and AI Overviews lean on business data; keep your profile complete and current.

How do you measure AI Overviews visibility?

Google includes traffic from pages shown in AI features in the overall Web data of Search Console’s Performance report; there is no separate “AI Overviews” filter[1]. So you need to search your target question set regularly and log which sites are shown as supporting links in the AI Overviews box — in the Neural Visibility Audit, Gemini and AI Overviews are measured as separate columns. According to SparkToro, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026[3]; see the zero-click guide.

Frequently asked questions

01Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google’s documentation says there are no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode — no new machine-readable files, “AI text files” or special schema.org markup. The page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet[1]. Structured data and clear content still make the page easier to understand.

02If I block Google-Extended, will I drop out of AI Overviews?

No. According to Google, Google-Extended doesn’t affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search; it controls use for Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini apps[2].
