perplexity.aireferral in GA4
To become a Perplexity source, allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt (Perplexity says it is used to surface sites in search results and not to train foundation models[1]), show a visible last-updated date, back claims with sources and answer the question in the first paragraph. Because Perplexity cites on almost every answer, which of your URLs gets quoted is directly measurable.
Which pages does Perplexity cite?
Perplexity searches the question, extracts relevant passages from the pages it finds and grounds the answer in them. So it’s not the whole page that wins but passages that stand on their own: a heading that restates the question, a clear answer in the first sentence, concrete numbers and dates, claims with a visible source.
- Freshness: visible “last updated” date and
dateModifiedmarkup — especially for pricing, regulation and anything with “2026” in it. - Sourced claims: pages citing their own data or official sources are preferred over unsourced marketing copy.
- Comparison tables: in “X or Y?” questions, table rows get quoted directly.
- Author/organization byline: pages that clearly state who wrote them and when they were updated.
What should you do to appear in Perplexity?
- Allow
PerplexityBotin robots.txt; check that CDN or firewall (WAF) rules don’t block it[1]. - Add Q&A blocks to service and product pages (AEO services).
- Use a visible updated date on every key page — and actually keep it current.
- Publish original data for your category: a small survey, a price index, a timing table — Perplexity loves sourced data.
- Identify the third-party sites cited in answers (list articles, forums, directories) and be present there with correct information.
How do you measure Perplexity visibility?
Because Perplexity’s source list is transparent, measurement is relatively easy: ask the target questions and record which URLs are listed and in what position. In the Neural Visibility Audit this becomes the “source coverage” metric (measurement guide).
Frequently asked questions
01Does allowing PerplexityBot mean my content trains AI models?
According to Perplexity’s documentation, PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models[1].
02Can I block Perplexity-User with robots.txt?
Perplexity says Perplexity-User supports user-requested visits and generally ignores robots.txt rules[1]. It reads your page for a single user question; it doesn’t build the search index.
