llms.txt is a file format proposed in 2024 for presenting a site’s most important pages to language models and AI agents as a short Markdown summary (/llms.txt)[1]. It’s a proposal, not a standard. Google explicitly says you don’t need “new machine readable files, AI text files” to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode[2]. Still, a file that takes a few hours to write is a tidy entry point for agents and developer tools that want to summarize your site.
What does the llms.txt format look like?
Per the proposal, the file lives at the root and is written in Markdown: an H1 (site/brand name), a short blockquote summary, optional paragraphs, and annotated link lists under H2 headings. An “Optional” section collects links that can be skipped when a shorter context is needed.
